Description

Arne is one of the best-known names in the repertoire, and this piece is a little gem: a masterpiece of restrained poignancy, it sets to music an imagined soliloquy in which a man confronts the fragility of his life. Allowing himself only the merest hint of word-painting (at “dost thou poise thy trembling wing to take its flight?”), Arne's most telling passage is heard in the final stuttering breaths, with Purcellian pauses, at the last words: “and pensive, wav’ring melancholy”.
